You may know that smoking can have a negative effect on your health, but did you know that smoking can also negatively affect your oral health? While you probably know that using tobacco can yellow and stain your teeth, did you know that you may also experience other different issues? Conversely, would you be surprised to learn that e-cigarettes can also influence the health of your smile?

For instance, smoking can actually lead to chronic bad breath and might kill good bacteria in your mouth. If you lose these beneficial bacteria, you’ll be more likely to have to deal with oral infections and a number of other medical problems. Similarly, without these good bacteria, bad bacteria can thrive and leave you more vulnerable to tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. If you do smoke, you could also be more susceptible to tooth loss and oral cancer.

Still, are e-cigarettes better for your oral health? Sadly, because e-cigarettes use nicotine, they will also impact the health of your teeth. Nicotine typically leads to gum recession, which can actually lead to problems such as gum disease. E-cigarettes can also cause your gums to become swollen, red, and tender. Unfortunately, these are very common symptoms of gum disease, meaning smoking might make gum disease much more difficult to recognize. Smoking e-cigarettes can also dry out your mouth, which will upset the balance of bacteria in your mouth.
